About our school

Elwin Elementary school is a K-6 elementary school servicing approximately 575 students. Almost 90% of our students are on free or reduced lunch and just over 40% are classified as English Learners. One of our goals remains to be reclassifying students as Fluent English Proficient before they leave our school. We are currently implementing a new language arts adoption (Macmillan) and are in our second year of implementation with a new math program (Harcourt). Elwin students continue to show growth in academic progress indicators; however our goal is to have all students proficient in English Language Arts and Math by 2014. We have been fortunate to maintain our Common Meeting Time schedule which allows teachers the time to meet in grade level and vertical teams on a weekly basis. Teachers are able to use this time to discuss common formative assessments, align instruction to key standards, and plan, target, and analyze target groups of students and target areas. Elwin Elementary has focused a lot of resources on technology. Classrooms are all equipped with a minimum of four computer, document cameras, laser printers, and SMART Boards. Students use the technology to access Accelerated Reader, Study Island, Brain Pop, Safari Montage, Reading Assistant, Microsoft Office, and the Internet. Teachers use the same tools, as well as Data Director (a database program which helps to track student information and progress over multiple years). Elwin will continue to grow students educationally and socially.
